What New Science Reveals About Fertility—and How Acupuncture Supports Ovarian Health

At Alleva Acupuncture, we specialize in fertility acupuncture for women in their 30s and 40s. Our approach is deeply aligned with what science now confirms: the ovarian environment matters.

Understanding Ovarian Aging

A groundbreaking study published in Science by researchers at UCSF is changing how we understand female fertility and ovarian aging. Using advanced 3D imaging and single-cell RNA sequencing, scientists compared mouse and human ovaries to map how they change over time.

Their findings? Fertility declines not just due to aging eggs but also because of environmental changes inside the ovary—including blood flow, inflammation, and nerve activity. In younger women, ovarian follicles are evenly spaced. In older women, they clump together in pockets surrounded by fibrotic (scar-like) tissue, and sympathetic nerve fibers increase, potentially disrupting ovulation and egg recruitment.

Even more striking, human egg cells undergo more genetic deterioration than mouse eggs—especially in genes related to DNA repair and metabolism, helping explain why fertility drops after age 35.

“This research underscores a key truth: fertility isn't just about egg count—it's about the entire ovarian ecosystem, from nerves to hormones to circulation.”

How Acupuncture Supports Fertility and Reproductive Health

At Alleva Acupuncture, we specialize in fertility acupuncture for women in their 30s and 40s. Our approach is deeply aligned with what science now confirms: the ovarian environment matters.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), fertility depends on balanced Qi and blood flow, especially in the Kidney and Liver systems, which are believed to govern reproductive health.

Acupuncture helps by:

  • Calming overactive sympathetic nerves, the same nerves shown to increase with age and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • Improving ovarian blood flow, which supports follicle development and egg quality

  • Reducing inflammation and modulating stress hormones like cortisol

  • Regulating ovulation and menstrual cycles
